Who We Are:

Gainesville Thrives promotes tutoring and mentoring by informing the faith-based community and others of needs and opportunities. For long-term academic success, mentoring can be as important as tutoring. The faith-based community is well-suited to help with this.

We promote tutoring and mentoring of expectant parents, parents and their infants, toddlers and preschool children, and kindergarten through high school students. Information for adult speakers with English as a second language will also be made available.

Gainesville Thrives seeks to foster connections between (1) faith-based groups that provide or would like to provide tutoring and/or mentoring, (2) elementary and high schools, (3) children and their families, (4) community organizations currently providing tutoring and mentoring, and (5) people in the academic community.

What We’ve Been Doing:

  • Regularly hosting networking events twice a year for leaders of schools, congregations, and community groups to support literacy and mentoring.

  • Regularly updating contact information of the faith-based community to facilitate volunteer involvement.

  • Supplied funds for Winning Reading Boost: $25,000

  • Assisting UF Fraternities and Sororities to put children’s libraries in salons and barbershops.

Your Story:

  • Is there a person who taught you and made you want to learn more?

  • How is your life different because of that person?

  • Would your life be different if you had not learned to read well?

  • Would you like to invest in the future of the next generation?

  • Would it be easier for you to invest your time or your money to support the skills development of a child in your community?
